The Creative Act

Rick Rubins book; The Creative Act resonated with me, as a product designer

(not artist or musician).

Why?

The creative process often involves a combination of habits, traits, and an environment that fosters free-flowing ideas. Creativity in engineering and design often requires a blend of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think outside the box.

Although this book is written from the perspective of an artist/musician, the creative process often involves similar fundamental principles than could be applied to product design.

Rubin's book delves into these aspects and provides insights into cultivating a mindset conducive to creativity.

Creativity, ideation, and problem-solving are crucial aspects of various professions, including industrial and mechanical design.

As a transferrable skill, creativity can be applied across a wide range of disciplines, fostering innovation and original thinking. As designers we should understand this skill and harness it to help
solve complex problems and produce beautiful products.

We immerse ourselves on any environment that nurtures creativity, we’re paid to play. Remaining in the state of play help to breed new ideas and solve problems with creative ease.

Being Neurodivergent allows us to search for solutions in a lateral and third dimension. We can pluck ideas from our imagination that other, lineal thinkers would find it hard to gestate.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially working within the creative industry.
